You have organized your trip and you are ready to go.
Here is a list of things you may wish to follow through with before you leave.

1. Tell your neighbours when you are leaving and when you plan to return. Ask them to watch for any suspicious activity around your home.
2. Leave a key with your neighbour or a friend you trust that you trust to enter your home in the event of an emergency
3. Make arrangements with your neighbour or friend to collect your newspaper/mail or have delivery of your newspaper/mail stopped.
4. Create the illusion you're home. Set automatic timers for lights inside and outside your home. Radio's and TV's can also be set the same way.
5. Keep shades, blinds  and curtains open.
6. Save energy while you are away. Turn your furnace or your air conditioner down.
7. Ensure small heat generating devices like hair dryers or curling irons are turned off or unplugged.
8. Remove perishables from your refrigerator or pantry before you leave. Ask your neighbour or friend to take the garbage out while you are away.
9. Make arrangements to have someone cut your grass or remove snow from your sidewalks and driveway while you are gone.
10. Mute the ringer on your phone and/or turn your answering machine down so no one can hear unanswered calls.
11. Lock the garage door. If your garage door is an automatic door unplug it.
12. Lock all gates and doors on your property.
13. Check to ensure all windows are closed and secured.
14. Make sure all faucets inside and outside your home are shut off. Ask your neighbour or friend to check your home for leaks while you are away.
15. You can save money by turning your hot water tank down
16. Place valuables in a locked safe or safety deposit box.
17. Leave your car in the driveway if possible or have your neighbour or friend park in your driveway from time to time.
18. Fill your car with gas before you leave.
19. Do a final walk through before you leave.

5. Prepare a snack for the flight.

Many travellers come home only to discover they have forgotten to do something. Don't be a statistic. Your home is a huge linvestment and should be cared for all the time.
